Getting a new dog is an amazing experience, but getting supplies for your new dog can be overwhelming. Check out our check list of everything you will need when you bring  your new puppy home!

Munchies:

1. Dog food– (this is a given) but try to get something that is pretty high quality and supports a Pomsky’s activity level. We recommend Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy and Victor Active Dog & Puppy Formula Grain-Free Dry Dog Food, 30-Pound. We feed all our dogs grain free.

2. Treats– If you don’t want to buy them, try making them with these recipes!
I do not recommend rawhides they are usually very processed and have all sorts of dyes. And I have heard nightmares of people taking their puppies to the vet because it didn’t digest properly and got stuck!

3. KONG – a great deterrent from your couch.

Essentials:

1. Dog crate or kennel – Crates are great for potty training! Also more times than often, a crate provides a sense of safety and the feeling of security.

“Crate training done properly is also a highly effective management system that can be a lifesaver for dog owners. Like any training method, crating can be abused, but using a crate for appropriate time periods is helpful with a variety of important goals, including house training, preventing destructive behavior, and teaching a dog to settle and relax.

If a dog is taught through positive reinforcement to love the crate, the crate becomes his own private and safe place, much like a bedroom for a child. The crate or kennel is somewhere the dog can go and not be bothered; it’s a perfect destination when the dog is tired or nervous. Dogs have a natural instinct to be in a den. Many dogs take to a crate very easily.”

“A must for any puppy owner, crates and containment devices keep your new pal in a confined area where you can monitor and housetrain him. You will need a dog crate or carrier, and an exercise pen, playpen, or gate when you bring your pup home.

Hard-sided crates and travel carriers are made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, plastic, and fiberglass. Though the stainless steel crates will last a lifetime, the lightweight plastic and fiberglass varieties provide a measure of safety and security for your puppy while driving or flying. They also replicate a cozy, warm den — especially when you outfit it with a soft bed or blanket.

When choosing a crate or carrier, make sure that your pup can stand up, lie down, turn around, and stretch inside. Though dogs prefer to have a close-in den-like space, they also need room — but not too much — to feel comfortable.

If you are unable to keep a watchful eye on your puppy, you may also wish to purchase a pen or some baby gates to keep him corralled. Exercise pens are a set of portable wire panels that confine your pup to a specific area. You can adjust them to fit just about any space. Baby gates, which are used to cordon off restricted areas, prevent him from roaming where he shouldn’t.” – www.cesarsway.com

2. Doggie Bed – This is a big decision and definitely depends on the size of your dog, how destructive they may be and what they prefer, but we recommend Coolaroo Elevated Pet Bed. They are comfortable, keep your puppy cool, and they can’t chew them up 😉

3. Food Bowls – Avoid plastic food and water bowls at all costs. They tend to harbor tons of bacteria and that’s the last thing you want for your new pup! Stick with Stainless Steel Bowls.

4. Collapsible Dog Bowl Great for when you are out and about!

5. Doggy Doormat to deter mud when you walk in your house from playing!

6. Puppy Pool! – A must for warm weather. Pomskies love to splash around and some even like to swim 😀

7. Leash – Any leash will do as long as it’s sturdy and won’t splinter your hands if your pup decides to make a run for it! We recommend Ruffwear

8. Collar – There are so many collars to choose from! Find out how to pick the right one for your pup from Ceasar Millan here.

9. Dog tags– Make sure to include ALL your contact information on them in case your pup decides to take a joy run.

Cleanliness:

1. Shampoo and Conditioner– Eventually you will have to wash the dog stench off your dog. Check out the Burt’s Bees Dog Shampoo, which is strong enough to get that stench out but gentle enough for your dogs skin.

2. King Komb– If you don’t want to have to be vacuuming dog hair for eternity, invest in a King Komb. They work to get that loose hair (which is waiting around to cling to everything black you own) off your dog allowing them to feel like a brand new girl or boy.

3. Flea and Tick– You do not want to have to deal with fleas and ticks. Especially since fleas can carry Lyme disease which is bad news bears. Check out Frontline which you can get from your vet.

Toys:

1. Rope– Make a DIY rope out of your old t-shirts! (How to here) This is a cheap fun toy, and will allow them to get to know your scent.

2. Elk Antlers – Every dog needs one of these! They don’t splinter and they last FOREVER! Also good for their teeth! They come in many different sizes.

3. Something to chase– Whether it is a frisbee or tennis ball, make sure you get something your dog can run after at the park!

Healthy:

1. Vet Records – All our puppies come with their first set of shots and a health certificate. It’s important that you visit your local vet shortly after bringing your new puppy home. Most vest have what they call a ‘puppy package’. You pay a one time fee which includes their first year of shots. Talk to your vet about your options! If you live in an apartment they will require that you provide their records when you bring your pup home.

2. Rabies Certificate– Keep this in a safe place and make sure to keep your rabies tag on your pup’s collar! If your dog does not have their certificate make sure to visit your vet to update their shots and receive the Rabies Certificate.

3. Find a Vet– You are going to have to visit a vet at least once a year. Make sure you find a reputable vet who can help you keep your dog healthy and happy!
